JUNIPERUS

Juniper. Needle- or scaly-leaved evergreen trees, shrubs, or groundcovers.

Description: Juniperus chinensis, Chinese juniper, can be either a mounded shrub growing 4 to 6 feet tall or an erect, conical tree that can reach a mature height of 50 feet. The blue-green or gray-green evergreen foliage can be scaly or needlelike, often with both forms on the same plant, and rather prickly. Zones 4-8.

J. horizontalis, creeping juniper, is a native shrub with a low, prostrate, horizontally layered form that grows no more than 2 feet tall. Foliage may spread to 4 to 8 feet per plant at maturity. Its blue-gray or green scaly foliage turns a soft plum purple in winter. Zones 2-8.

J. virginiana, Eastern red cedar, is a native tree that reaches a mature height of 50 to 100 feet with an upright, pyramidal form. The silvery to deep blue-green foliage droops slightly with age and bears waxy blue-gray berries. Zones 3-8.

How to grow: All junipers require full sun and well-drained soil. Chinese juniper and Eastern red cedar benefit from evenly moist soil conditions. Creeping juniper tolerates dry soils, seaside or alkaline conditions, and de-icing salts. Prune junipers only to control the size of spreading shrubs; never shear. Phomopsis twig blight can pose problems during a wet spring; prune and destroy diseased twigs. Bagworms can infest junipers at any time; hand pick and destroy the larvae. If you are in or near an applegrowing area, be aware that juniper is the alternate host for cedar apple rust, a disease that overwinters on Eastern red cedar and severely injures apple trees.

Landscape uses: Junipers are a good choice for hot, dry, sunny spots that are out of reach of regular watering. There are hundreds of cultivars in many colors, shapes, and sizes. Choose appropriate cultivars for specimens, massed plantings, foundation planting, groundcovers, screens, hedges, and windbreaks.
